7.3.14

UCQ page 1

I'm trying to finally buckle down and tackle some of this comic I've been wanting to work on since last year!

I need to replace the text with a nice font at some point. There will (I hope) be more of Meredith and her older sister soon(ish...).

17.10.13

Neighbours Zine

Clips from a zine I was working on about my neighbours.

Just a silly little thing.

10.3.13

Plait

I had this idea that I want to turn into something (add colour, develop the 'plot', etc), but for now I'm just going to leave these drawings right here.
1, 2, 3, 4...
I've also got some (simple) ideas for patterns that I'd like to try soon! Courtney had a go at a repeating pattern the other day and it was pretty sweet so now I've got the pattern-making itch!

Unfortunately, the other day my laptop wouldn't turn on and it started to smoke and stink like brimstone, which I'm told means there's a problem. Dan took it completely apart for the second time in its sad little life...and then a third time (luckily I was not at home to witness this horror). Now it's apparently fixed (though mostly exhausted of power after its ordeal), but I need to get a new adaptor and can't use it until that arrives... Whoever said being a freelance illustrator wasn't frightfully exciting and wrought with all sorts of perilous adventures never met me! *soft weeping in the background*

No matter. Mark my words, I shall not be defeated by this minor setback...!

25.1.13

O Brave New World, That has such people in't...

"Don't you wish you were free, Lenina?"

"Fat; having lost here youth; with bad teeth, and a blotched complexion, and that figure (Ford!) - you simply couldn't look at her without feeling sick..."

"His back was horizontally streaked with crimson, and from weal to weal ran thin trickles of blood."

The Eyes

I started this comic way back in May, but never finished it. I still like the idea so maybe eventually I'll get back to it.

Also I've remodelled/refocussed my carbonmade (instead of getting rid of it altogether like I was going to do...).

28.2.12

Zara When She Rubbed Her Eyes

Here is a preview of the cover of one of two book commissions I have just finished.
Both of them were really fun to do (as well as challenging at times) and I'm pretty pleased with the results of both.

I thought the first story was going to be my favourite because the subject matter of the second book (cover above) involved a lot of creatures (which is not my forté) where the first was more in my comfort zone. However, I think it's because of having to work so hard on the second one and having things work out really positively that I've begun to appreciate what the second book put me through and it became my favourite for that reason.

Hope you all enjoyed the video last week! Now back to the project :)

The Princess and the P--

True story.

Don't judge me. I was very young at the time. Maybe this little misunderstanding was what led to my love of language and appreciation for puns...

21.3.11

Pictoplasma Missing Link Project

The other week I submitted something to Pictoplasma's Missing-Link Project! The thoughts behind this one was fairly simple:
My missing link is a rather benign character. He is not unlike anyone else, but he is rarely seen. He is alone. And he is mysterious. I believe that unseen beasts and forces are far more intriguing (and frightening) than ones that you see because the minute you see something you begin to analyse and plan how to escape from it or exploit it or befriend it or whatever. The more mystery there is to it, the less you can plan what to do next and it has the upper hand.

RABBIT

This is a project I'm working on for my Real World module. After getting my dissertation printed and sending it to be bound(!!), I printed off the file for this booklet. I just cut and folded it MOMENTS AGO!

16.1.11

Les Reines Bleues 01

Here we have the first page of a potential two and a half page comic to express an idea about sense and nonsense.
Not totally satisfied with the speech bubbles... but it was all rather fun to do. I have so many plans and I'm so very excited about just getting on with things. Tomorrow begins great things!

6.1.11

Doctor! Doctor!

"Don't get your gross baby juices all over my new doctor coat."
"B-but I just saw you give that patient a lobotomy!"
"Hahahah! No, no, what you just saw was me putting a cabbage in that man's brain cavity."
"..."
"I am sorry; I cannot help you."

5.1.11

World Book Day bid

I was working on some illustrations for the 2010 World Book Day bid.

In four phrases, the story is about: a kid, cool shoes, lame shoes and a Celtic wish-granting statue nicknamed "The Sleeper".

I wasn't going to bother entering anymore because I didn't have enough ideas for it and I wasn't sure how to go about tackling the few other ideas I had in the same style that I'd done the above illustrations. But then I saw this guy's amazing blog and was inspired to work really loosely (which is what my stuff looks like before I tighten it up anyway!)! Then I came up with these:

Not sure if the top one is too messy or what, but I still like them both. I might slap a texture or something over the top of them and see how I feel later...

3.1.11

A tower floating into dreams

Putting together a simple diagram for my dissertation, but I may just scrap it altogether because I'm not so sure if it's doing its job like it should be...

Obviously I was not cut out for making diagrams (also I think the wording is confusing).
I'll fix it later.

P.S. Look what it's doing to me! ;o;
turning me schitzo...

SEQUENCE Magazine

Micky and Nikki of Nematode in Space glory have started a new comics magazine called SEQUENCE. And it looks rather promising.

Spaghetti Western

This is so appropriate now that I've just finished a bowl of spaghetti! Well, we had a one week assignment which went like this: using one of the five preselected paintings deemed suitable for this project as a springboard, create a wordless story with 12 images.
We were meant to use the colours from the painting as well, but I didn't follow that part of the brief as closely as I could have I suppose... hmm...

It still needs tweaking... I'd like to draw out the beginning really to show that the cowboy was in the middle of a card game that was interrupted by the Flying Spaghetti Monster's presence before the series of western-style ages-before-anything-happens poses.
I've grown rather attached to this cowboy character... I may well use him again...
And here I shall include the prep work for a few of the pages. See if you can decipher them as they are coded in Nicole-brain-language (not too different from binary really...).
